Rug Cleaning Stratford | St Marys | Perth County

Area Rug Cleaning Stratford & Perth County Since 1984

Stratford is not a typical Ontario city. Heritage homes, a world-class theatre district, and Perth County farmhouses mean that handmade rugs — Persian, Oriental, antique, and heirloom pieces - show up here more than almost anywhere in the region.

Those Persian and Oriental rugs need a different kind of rug cleaning than wall-to-wall carpet. Most equipment available locally was not built for them.

What Kind of Rug Do You Have?

Flying Carpets cleans handmade rugs of all types and origins — Persian, Oriental, Turkish, Afghan, Indian, Pakistani, Moroccan, tribal, kilim, runner, shag, vintage, and everything in between. If it is a natural-fibre or handmade rug, we clean it.

The fibre, age, and construction of your piece determine how it is handled. Every rug is inspected individually before anything is done — there is no single process that fits all of them. A few types carry extra considerations worth knowing about before you book:

Natural-Fibre and Wool Rug Cleaning

Wool Rug Cleaning Stratford - St Marys - Perth County

Most handmade rugs — Persian, Oriental, tribal, kilim, and many area rugs — are built on a wool pile. Wool is durable, but it felts permanently under heat. Steam or high-temperature water causes the fibres to lock together, the pile to mat flat, and the rug to shrink. None of that can be reversed. All wool and natural-fibre rugs at Flying Carpets are hand-washed with cool water and dye-tested before washing begins.

Silk Rugs

Silk Rug Cleaning Stratford - St Marys - Perth County

Silk holds its value in its sheen. That sheen cannot be restored once it is gone — steam destroys it permanently. Silk rugs, whether pure silk or silk-and-wool combinations, are the most delicate pieces we clean. They are handled more slowly and more conservatively than any other fibre type: cool water only, pH-balanced soap, flat drying in a controlled environment.

Heirloom & Antique  Rugs

Antique Rug Cleaning Stratford - St Marys - Perth County

Age changes a rug's fibres and dyes in ways that are not always visible on the surface. Antique pieces — and vintage rugs that are heading that way — need a slower, more conservative process.

Stratford and Perth County see a lot of these: heritage homes, estate sales, family collections passed down over generations. If you are unsure whether your rug needs antique-level handling, email photos to info@flyingcarpets.ca before booking.

Why Handmade Rugs Need a Specialist

Most cleaners in Stratford use truck-mounted steam systems built for synthetic broadloom. That equipment is fine for carpet. It is not built for handmade rugs.

Natural fibres — wool, silk, cotton — respond to heat and pressure differently than synthetic carpet does. Dyes bleed. Wool felts. Silk pile collapses. Antique fibres fracture.

Flying Carpets is a dedicated rug specialist. Our Cambridge facility handles Persian, Oriental, wool, silk, and antique rugs only — pieces that need individual assessment, hand-washing, and flat drying in a controlled space. Your rug is never cleaned on a driveway or in a parking lot. It arrives at our facility, is inspected, washed by hand, dried flat, and returned.

What Happens at Our Facility

When your rug arrives from Stratford or Perth County, the first step is always a full inspection. The fibre type is identified. Dye stability is tested across every colour area before washing begins. Moth activity, pet damage, and existing repairs are all noted.

Dry soil removal comes before any water is used. Fine grit settles deep into the foundation of a handmade rug where vacuuming cannot reach it — and it does more damage there than most people realize.

After dry removal, the rug is hand-washed with warm water and fibre-appropriate soap, then rinsed until the water runs completely clear. It dries completely in a climate-controlled space.

Step-By-Step Rug Cleaning Stratford Process

Every rug at Flying Carpets receives the same methodical treatment. There are no shortcuts.

  1. Inspection — fibre condition, dye stability, existing repairs, and fragile areas are documented
  2. Dye testing — warm, pH-neutral water is applied to every colour area individually
  3. Dry soil removal — accumulated grit is lifted from the pile before any water is used
  4. Stain pre-treatment — gentle, aged-fibre-appropriate solutions only
  5. Hand washing — slowly, with cool water and gentle wool-safe soap
  6. Full rinsing — all solution removed; residue continues reacting with aged fibres after cleaning ends
  7. Flat drying — the rug dries completely flat in a climate-controlled space
  8. Final inspection — the rug is checked again before it is wrapped and returned

Most rugs are back to you within 10 to fourteen days.

Before You Book

Send photos for antique, silk, or damaged rugs. Email info@flyingcarpets.ca before booking and we can identify the fibre, flag any issues, and give you an accurate quote.

Mention pet urine at booking. Urine salts bond to fibres in a way that a standard wash alone cannot fully fix. We apply an enzyme pre-treatment to affected areas — but we need to know it is there.

Repair can happen at the same time as cleaning. Flying Carpets employs expert weavers who can reweave worn areas, repair edges, and restore fringe while the rug is already at our facility. One trip, one return.

How much does it cost to clean an area rug?

Price List for Rug Cleaning Services

Cleaning is priced per square foot. Cost depends on size, fibre type, and condition. Silk and antique pieces are priced higher because they take longer and require more care.

As a rough guide, a standard wool area rug costs about what two restaurant meals cost. Repair work is quoted separately after the rug arrives.

Free pickup and delivery is included for all Stratford and Perth County clients. Call 519-404-8009 for a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm not sure what type of rug I have. Can you help?

Yes. Email photos to info@flyingcarpets.ca and we will identify the fibre type and advise before you book.

Do you pick up in Stratford, or do I need to drive to Cambridge?

We pick up and deliver throughout Stratford and Perth County at no charge. No trip required on your end.

Can any handmade rug be steam cleaned?

No. Steam causes permanent damage to wool, silk, and natural-dye rugs — felting, dye bleed, pile collapse. We use cool water only.

How long does cleaning take?

Most rugs are returned within seven to ten business days. Antique pieces and rugs needing repair may take a little longer.

Can cleaning and repair be done at the same time?

Yes. Email photos before booking so we can assess the repair scope. Everything is completed in one visit.

How often should my rug be professionally cleaned?

Wool and Oriental rugs: every one to three years. Silk rugs: every two to three years. Antique rugs: every three to five years. Homes with pets or young children should aim for the shorter end.

Free pickup and delivery. No steam. No harsh chemicals. Every antique rug treated as the irreplaceable piece it is.
