Silk Rug Cleaning in Stratford & Perth County
Stratford's Silk Rug Cleaning Specialist
A silk rug holds its value in the fibre itself — the sheen, the colour depth, the fine knotwork that no machine can replicate. That sheen is not a finish. It cannot be reapplied. The wrong cleaning removes it permanently in a single session.

The Silk Rug Problem in Stratford
General carpet cleaners use heat, pressure, and rotating brushes designed for synthetic broadloom. Applied to a silk rug, those tools flatten the pile, fray the fibres, and bleed the dyes. The damage is visible immediately — and permanent.
Flying Carpets is a dedicated rug specialist, not a general carpet cleaner. We hand-wash silk rugs in our own facility at 758 King Street East in Cambridge, where dye testing, cool water, and flat drying are standard on every job.
That means:
- Your rug is cleaned in our facility, never on your driveway or in a parking lot
- It is hand-washed with cool water and pH-balanced, silk-safe soap
- Every colour area is dye-tested before any water touches the rug
- It dries completely flat in a climate-controlled space — never hung, never tumbled
What Happens to a Silk Rug Under Heat
Steam cleaning operates above 200°F. Silk begins to change at a fraction of that. One pass with a steam cleaner causes:
- The pile to crush permanently — the sheen is gone and does not return
- Dyes to bleed from one colour into another, irreversibly
- Individual silk strands to fray and weaken, altering the surface texture
- Fine knotwork to distort under pressure, blurring crisp design edges
- Moisture to become trapped in the dense foundation, leading to mildew
There is one correct method: hand wash, cool water, pH-balanced soap, flat drying in a controlled space. No exceptions.
"The silk rugs we see most damaged were not ruined by years of dirt. They were ruined in a single cleaning." — Ethan, The Rug Professor, Flying Carpets, Cambridge, Ontario
How We Hand-Wash Silk Rugs
Every silk rug at Flying Carpets moves through the same careful sequence in our Cambridge facility:
- Inspection — we examine the rug in good light for damage, prior repairs, and fragile areas
- Dye testing — every colour is tested individually before water is applied
- Dry soil removal — loose grit is lifted before washing begins
- Stain pre-treatment — individual stains are treated with silk-safe solutions
- Hand washing — gently, using cool water and pH-balanced soap
- Full rinsing — until all solution is removed; residue dulls silk and attracts new soil
- Flat drying — the rug dries completely flat in a climate-controlled environment
- Pile grooming — the pile is set in the direction of the weave before the rug is wrapped for return
Silk Rug Odour & Stain Removal
Flying Carpets offers dedicated pet urine and odour removal for silk rugs. Urine salts crystallise as they dry and bond to silk fibres — an enzyme pre-treatment neutralises them at the source before washing begins.
Stain removal is assessed individually. Stains that have set into silk can be stubborn, but our team tries every available method before advising on what is and is not recoverable. We also offer rug deodorizing for silk rugs carrying persistent odours from pets or storage.
Fringe, Edge & Repair Services
Silk rug fringe is often the first thing to show wear. While your rug is here in our Cambridge facility, Flying Carpets' expert weavers can also:
- Repair or replace fringe — matched as closely as possible to the original
- Secure loose selvedge edges — before damage spreads inward
- Reweave small areas of pile damage — repaired by hand

What Silk Rug Cleaning Costs
Silk rug cleaning is priced per square foot. Cost depends on the size of the rug, the fibre type (silk is priced higher than wool due to slower and more careful handling), and any add-ons like stain treatment, pet urine removal, or repair work — all quoted separately after the rug arrives.
Pickup and delivery anywhere in Stratford and Perth County is always free.

Your Silk Rug Questions Answered
Can you steam clean a silk rug?
No. Steam permanently crushes silk pile and strips the sheen from the fibres. We hand-wash all silk rugs with cool water and pH-balanced solutions only.
How often should a silk rug be professionally cleaned?
Every 2 to 3 years for regular household use, or sooner after a spill. Stains set quickly in silk fibres.
Do you handle silk rug repair and cleaning at the same time?
Yes. Before booking and we'll assess any repair needs so we're ready when the rug arrives.
Is pickup and delivery free in Stratford?
Yes — free throughout Stratford and Perth County. Call 519-404-8009 to schedule.
